March 4, 2008 The main
event for the past couple months has been the snow—record amounts for
December, January, and February. Freezing rain fell in February,
giving the trees crystal branches
against a dark morning sky. Rough icicles
formed on the front-porch roof, and the next day they had melted some as
they sparkled in the sun. Another
day wet snow fell, loading the
branches down. Of course, the power went out, and we were on
generator for about 12 hours. We're down to one
path to the house—from the garage to the side door. I keep
it wide enough for one person carrying a bag of firewood. The
fence in front is completely buried.
I've been raking snow off the roofs in
anticipation of rain that will add to the weight. The local roads
have the worst frost heaves I've ever
seen—due, they say, to the repeated thawing and freezing. Red
squirrels pop in and out of holes in
the snow on the deck as they eat our sunflower seeds. Feature - Postage stamp honoring Louis Comfort Tiffany. Quote for the Day - "Write
with nouns and verbs, not with adjectives and adverbs. The adjective hasn't
been built that can pull a weak or inaccurate noun out of a tight place."
